The French concern Nexter presented the 140 mm Ascalon tank gun at the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris (France). A promising gun can get a Franco-German tank of the future, writes Defense24.
It is noted that Ascalon can become the main weapon of the promising Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) tank, which Germany and France are working on. The Enhanced Main Battle Tank (EMBT) can also get a new gun. The exhibition showed EMBT with a serial gun of 120 mm caliber, which received new SHARD shells.
Ascalon is a technology demonstrator. The guns are based on developments that were used as part of the work on the FTMA project in the 1990s. Work on the prototype of the gun is planned to be completed in 2023. It is believed that the new gun will be lighter than 120 mm guns.
The gun will receive sub-caliber ammunition with an optimal ratio of length to diameter of the tungsten core of the projectile. “This should lead to the ability to effectively deal with new generation enemy tanks, such as the T-14 Armata, at distances up to 5 kilometers,” writes Defense24.
Earlier it became known that the German concern Rheinmetall presented the KF51 Panther tank with a 130 mm caliber gun at Eurosatory.
In January 2021, Defense News reported that the UK had started talks with France and Germany to build a new tank that could replace the Leopard 2 and Leclerc by 2035.
