On May 3, the US State Department considered the arrest of the basketball player unlawful. An inter-ministerial team led by Presidential Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens was set up to secure her release.

Greiner was arrested on March 5, the American was detained at the capital’s Sheremetyevo airport. She was charged with drug smuggling. The American has been performing in Russia since 2015, defending the colors of the UMMC from Yekaterinburg. Greiner has won two Olympic gold medals with Team USA.
