The organizers of the international youth boxing tournament “Gergey Bornemissa Memorial” in Hungary banned Ukrainian Diana Petrenko from showing the flag of the Azov battalion. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
Petrenko, who took second place in the weight category up to 50 kilograms, unfurled the flag of Ukraine with the symbols of the battalion applied to it at the awards ceremony. One of the organizers approached the athlete, after which she had to remove the symbol.
Earlier on June 14, Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Vadim Gutzeit announced that local athletes would boycott tournaments with the participation of Russians and Belarusians. The decision was announced at a meeting with all-Ukrainian federations of Olympic and non-Olympic sports.
Azov was formed in 2014 in Mariupol. Initially, it acted as a battalion of the special police patrol service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, after which it moved to the National Guard.
